Street Cleaning

Steam Clean Photo_1The historic beauty and vibrant character of the Tenderloin is best appreciated when waste isn’t clogging the gutters, litter isn’t cluttering the sidewalks, and stains aren’t crossing one’s path underfoot. The CBD’s cleaning program is the flagship service of its efforts to beautify the Tenderloin neighborhood, and consists of a comprehensive, regular schedule of services whose efficacy can be seen in pristine streets, beautiful public spaces like Boedekker Park and the UN Plaza, and the unspoiled, original beauty of the neighborhood’s historic buildings.

Through a service partnership with San Francisco Clean City, the 29 blocks of the Tenderloin neighborhood regularly undergo a comprehensive cleaning that includes the following:

  • Sidewalk and gutter sweeping twice a day, Monday through Friday
  • Soap and water scrub down of properties twice a month
  • Steam cleaning of sidewalks once per month
  • Targeted steam cleaning of “hot spots”
  • Graffiti, needle and waste removal

As a result of these efforts, over 17,000 bags of litter were swept off the sidewalks and gutters last year, 140 Tenderloin residents found temporary employment with SF Clean City, and the neighborhood as a whole continues to become a more attractive place to live.
