TNT NEWSLETTER Edition #2

Hello TNT Community!
The New Tenderloin,
TNT, is continuing to grow and gain momentum. As word gets out that our community is rising to the challenges
we face, more and more people are getting inspired and involved! In addition, other communities are motivated
by our example and are banding together to address their own challenges.
TNT
believes community-based solutions create lasting change. How many times have you heard a story about how
one person or one small change turned an entire community around? The Tenderloin is full of these inspired
and motivated individuals who are willing to be part of the solution for our neighborhood. Many have joined
TNT, and we invite many more! Read on for TNT updates and ways you can get involved!
Updates:
§
TNT helped the Tenderloin
Police Station plan an exciting and fun National Night Out! This is an annual nation-wide event.
We had over 300 Tenderloin residents attend and enjoy the food, prizes, and music.
§
Drug Task Group gathered and submitted over 5,000 signatures to the Public Safety Committee and will
continue presenting the petitions to other city officials. It is not too late to sign the petition online!
Go to http://www.petitiononline.com/TNT/Petition.html to sign, and ask your friends to sign
too! Stay tuned Contact Elaine Zamora for more information (415) 440-7570 x 21
§ Violence Task Group and Community Housing Organizing
Project collaborated on the Safe Haven Campaign for the Tenderloin and Sixth Street. Safe Havens are places
of refuge throughout our community. They are businesses, churches, housing properties, and offices where
you can seek refuge if you are feeling vulnerable on the street. You will notice the neon-green decal in
the windows designating the site as a Safe Haven. For a complete list of Safe Haven sites, or to become
a Safe Haven site, please contact Tomiquia Moss at (415) 358-3909.
§
Pedestrian Safety
Task Group requested and received high visibility school zone signs for all three schools in the community. We
also requested and received the re-painting of ten damaged or faded crosswalks in the community. We have
more pedestrian safety projects up our sleeves so stay tuned! For more information contact Dina Hilliard
at (415) 200-8448.
§ TNT presented at the Board of Supervisors Public Safety
Hearing on September 10th! Thanks to everyone that partnered with TNT to give public comment
and show support for safety in the Tenderloin. TNT made the following requests of the Public Safety Committee:
1.
A continued partnership
between TNT and the Public Safety Committee
2. Research recommending and implementing a “Tenderloin Rescue Team” much like the model implemented in the
Bay View district. (This is like the Code Enforcement Task Force, but deals with neighborhood-wide issues
rather than individual properties)
3.
Support expansion of the Crisis Response Network into
the Tenderloin. TNT is in preliminary dialogue with CRN to begin planning for this expansion.
4. Mandate that the MTA Commission implements and properly funds the recommendations
made in the 2007 Tenderloin-Little Saigon Neighborhood Transportation Study.
To watch the Public Safety Hearing
online go to www.sfgov.org, in the “City Resources” section, click on SFGTV. Find the Public Safety Committee Hearing
date set for September 10th and scroll an hour and twenty minutes into the meeting. It’s
good television!
